Burlington Water Resources' Customers -
Today, a higher than normal amount of chlorine was briefly introduced into the water system, possibly leading to taste or odor issues. Please flush your taps if you notice these issues before using. Samples taken from the pipe network indicate that chlorine levels are within acceptable standards. See below for our official update that we want to share with you:
A brief operational issue at the Drinking Water Plant allowed a volume of water with chlorine above the 4.0 mg/L standard to be discharged to the distribution system. Corrective actions were taken including shutting down the plant and flushing nearby hydrants (which includes dechlorinating any water that might reach storm drains) to remove as much of the chlorinated water as possible from the pipe network. Once chlorine concentrations returned to normal within the plant, the plant was restarted to introduce additional fresh water to the distribution system. Measurements from the distribution system indicate that normal operational conditions have been restored at this time. Given the size of the pipe network, the storage system, our flushing efforts and the relative volume that was discharged, it is possible that this was not detected by users in the system – however, we wanted to make sure that users were aware and that you may wish to flush your water faucets until any unusual chlorine taste or odor dissipates.
