Leddy Park Beach Reopened

Please click here to acknowledge receipt of this message

The Beach at Leddy Park is now reopened for public access. Based on the most recent sampling results and our prompt spill remediation work, we believe that there is no longer an elevated impact to public health.

We collected samples at different points shortly after the contractor's 9/21 accidental discharge of water condensate containing ~1 gallon of the organic compound styrene into a stream that feeds into Lake Champlain at Leddy Beach. Despite a quick spill response by Public Works and a spill contractor, the initial results showed a higher than acceptable level of styrene. We directed our contractor to conduct additional mitigation followed by additional sampling with the help of an independent environmental management firm. With these recent results which show non-detectable levels of styrene in points in the stream closest to Lake Champlain and the overall dilution of the condensate, the beach can be reopened.

We will be leaving a sign up at Leddy's stream pool to further allow any remaining styrene to dissipate.
